As with all things, due to the lack of a written language and codified history, the origins of anything in Sogadar cannot be pinpointed to a single answer.

The most commonly accepted theory derives the name Sogadar from the old-Sogad noun for "Archer" Sugud - which in contemporary times has evolved to become Skuda or Skula. Dar originally meant "Gate", but has become synonymous to mean "Royal Court". Sogadar could therefore mean "The Court of Archers".

The name Sogadar, however, is also a pun on the Sogad noun for "Merchant" Sovdagar. Reflecting the transition of the Sogad people from nomadic tribes to semi-nomadic merchant kings, the name Sogadar therefore could also mean "The Court of the Merchant-Archers"
