Fun Fact: Words for Death

  • Duke

Language in Helios has a robust history dating back to before the Helian people were a unified race, but something that stands out to foreigners who are learning Low Helian is that there are dozens of specific words for death, and a distinct lack of words for life.

Where one people may say "Henry Died," to tell someone that Henry passed on. In Helios there would be a specific word for the means in which Henry passed. IE, "He was bludgeoned to death" would be a specific word. "Henry died fleeing battle like a coward." would be distinctly different than "Henry died covering a retreat during battle."

This also refers to life as well. "Henry woke up early." would be "Henry didn't die in his sleep and rose early."

    Examples
"Henry is Immortal." => "Henry hasn't died yet."
"Henry traveled safely." => "Henry wasn't killed on the road."
"Henry killed John." => "John was stabbed to death by Henry."
"Henry has lived for 23 years." => "Henry hasn't died for 23 years."
