Excerpts from the journal of Om Zur (Part 1):
Second of Ice's Reign, 29SC
It’s been two months since Yoltar’s left to peddle his wares in New Haven. Usually it takes less than a couple of weeks to sell his entire stock, so where is he? I knew it was a bad idea to make so many stools, I keep telling him that nobody’s going to buy a stool when they can get a good chair, but he never listens.
I’ve been able to run the shop, and fulfill all the orders (well, except for the “nothing made by that dwarf” requests we keep getting, but the way I see it a table’s a table). I just hope Yoltar comes back soon, because even the customers that were polite (or at least, not as rude as the rest) are starting to call me awful things.
First of Last Frost, 29SC
Yoltar has been gone for four months. The village council is already making preparations to name Taro Carva Kol the new village elder come the new year. I already can’t stand that guy, I can’t imagine what he’ll be like once he’s the village elder.
May the sentinels have mercy on this village...
Fourth of New Life, 30SC
They took the workshop. Yoltar has been gone for five months and even though im the only trainer carpenter in the village, they won’t let me keep the workshop. They would rather just go without it than let a dwarf own land in this village. I can’t even get in, they nailed the door shut (which is a damn shame, that door was one of Yoltar’s finest and they completely ruined it). Tonight will be the last night I spend in Uli Olgum, first thing in the morning I’m taking what little money I have, buying a horse, and heading for new haven.
Fifth of New Life, 30SC
I couldn’t buy a horse, apparently I only had enough to afford the “human price” of the horse. The “scum price” was nearly twice as much, so I stole a mule. I wasn’t planning on ever coming back to this place anyway, but I don’t really have the choice anymore. I should reach New Haven tomorrow, hopefully after I get there I can find out what happened to Yoltar
Seventh of New Life, 30SC
I’ve arrived in New Haven, and wow! I’ve never seen so many buildings before! I’ve never gotten lost in a town before! I’ve never been so overwhelmed and in need of a drink before!
Eventually I found my way to a cozy little tavern called The Sunken Head, and I guess Yoltar was right once again, because it looks like this place just got some new barstools. I asked the innkeeper where she got them, apparently Yoltar had his wagon set up at the market for about a week, but left months ago. Where could he have gone?
Eighth of Rain's Time, 30SC
I spoke with the innkeeper this evening, and it’s exactly as I feared. Apparently some mercenaries visited the inn and they said they found Yoltar, or at least what was left of him, when they raided a bandit encampment is the mountains far to the north-west. I know it’s morbid to think about, but I have to go to see for myself. Besides, I have literally nowhere else to go now.
13th of Rain's Time, 30SC
I’ve made it to the mountain, and sure enough Yoltar’s wagon is here. I could hardly stand looking at what’s become of the horses, I don’t think I can investigate any further. Goodbye old friend.
13th of Rain's Time, 30SC (Second Entry)
I’ve heard stories of this place in Uli Olgum. Back there they called it “the wall.” Nobody knew what it was or who built it, just that it was ancient and covered in intricate carvings. Well, I’ve never heard stories of the wall opening. When I stand close to the wall some of the carvings slide open revealing a staircase leading deep underground, and when I step away the carvings slam shut once again. Remarkable! I’ve never seen anything like this. I wonder what secrets could be buried within! I’m going to head back to New Haven to get a lantern and other supplies, and then I’m returning to this site immediately. This is my chance to make history!
I loved this post! Especially like the inserted wiki link to the town. Looking forward to seeing what Om Zur finds in there.
@Tioteche Thank you! Should be pretty exciting when I get around to writing part 2.
