Codifying Community Standards and Discord Rules
-
This was previously discussed briefly in a fleeting moment a short while ago but I think we should discuss it more in-depth. We've grown as a community and have begun to diversify our use of the discord. We're at 80 people with the "Member" tag and 139 people total in the Discord, holy smokes!
So here is my proposal:
We separate out community standards and Discord rules from the charter, it doesn't have to be it's own physical document, just its own section. This section would be completely independent of any in-game rules, modifications or laws.
Right now we have section 6 which reads:
- Rights of Members
a. All Members of the Realms of Candarion have the following rights and liberties
● Liberty from discrimination and hate speech
● Freedom of Thought, Speech, Assembly, Opinion
● Right to a fair trial
● Freedom from cruel and unusual punishments
● Presumption of Innocence until guilt is proven
● Right to a new trial if new evidence surfaces, or if judicial process was not correctly
followed
● Right to not be charged for a crime that was not a crime when the act was
performed
● Liberty from improper imprisonment or punishment
and we have the Discord rules:
-
Don't be a dick
1a. This includes discriminatory language -
If you have a problem with someone or something going on, SPEAK UP! Talk to any of the admins, we are here to help!
-
Keep random comments out of important channels, I WILL DELETE POINTLESS MESSAGES IN THOSE CHANNELS
These are all kind of vague and some are completely outside the scope of the community.
Whatever community standards we define should have punishments that are independent of the game, a punishment like "Go gather 30 chests of end rods for Mimos end rod beacon pyramid" is silly. I would say such punishments would be something like a ban from playing on the server for [X AMOUNT OF TIME] or a restriction on Discord usage through a server mute for [X AMOUNT OF TIME].
Whatever it is, I think it's time that we separate out, vote on and codify some real, clearly defined community standards that are easy to follow, and easy to determine the consequences of.
What are your thots on this? Initial suggestions on rules? Yah or nah to the whole suggestion?

Are we trying to make like a criminal code here? I feel like that's a bit excessive to try and be so detailed.

@ThunderPony I was mostly thinking just clarifying and agreeing on standards as some people have discovered that because we never voted on the vague Discord rules, they technically don't have to abide by them.

The way I always saw the discord rules was that it was supposed to be admin enforcement.
So with that in mind, admins should just delete posts of people breaking those rules, and to expand on that, I could see incremental (15 minutes-1day max) mutes being given out
With politics stuff being posted after the politics rule, none of us wanted to start deleting stuff, fearing it would fan the fire. But it was also a real dick move to just start ignoring rules when we're just trying to keep things civil without this becoming a full time job.
But at the end of the day, having a hearing that takes 2 weeks to set up and hours to plan... once a week.... is untenable. Hopefully the community will agree to some rules and trust us with enforcement of those rules.
