Chronicles of Azvar: The Azvari Diet
The typical diet of the Azvari people varies greatly from others due to the lack of wildlife present on the continent of Azvar. While the continent was once inhabited by the standard range of creatures, the arrival of the fell beasts resulted in the eventual disappearance of the beasts of the sky and land. Any attempt to establish a pasture out in the open is quickly thwarted when night comes and the fell beasts roam. As such, the only meat available to the Azvari comes from the sea. Though fishing comes with its own challenges, it is not so difficult that the Azvari cannot supplement their diet with fish, mollusks, and crustaceans.
It is not in the nature of the fell beasts to attack plant life, so the Azvari are able to grow crops that are not vulnerable to being trampled by wandering kuzam. The mainstays of the Azvari diet are wheat, corn, beans, and a quick-growing vine native to Azvar known as kartuf. The great benefit of kartuf is that it is just as prone to grow in a cave as in direct sunlight, allowing the Azvari to have a consistent food supply year round. Kartuf is usually ground into a powder and then mixed into bread or used to make a hearty broth for stew.
Upon coming to Candarion, the diet of the Azvari refugees has changed to a degree. Beef and pork are now more readily available, though the Azvari still prefer the fruits of the sea. They still grow many of the same crops, though the usual mainstay kartuf is used less and less in lieu of standard Ornthasian produce. The vine prefers mountain soil, so the current Azvari settlements are not well-positioned to grow it in abundance.
